This excursion is based in the lively bustling city of Zaragoza in the north of Spain. We will be using the comfortable 4* city Zenit Don Yo hotel (in Zaragoza) on a bed and breakfast basis. Breakfast is buffet and offers hot and cold options.
Zaragoza is the 5th largest city in spain and is home to some of the best, Moorish architecture outside of Andalucia (such as Aljafería Palace – filled with ornate Arabic arches and carvings). It is also on of the best places to see the works of painter Francisco de Goya. It also boats two great cathedrals and very unique cuisine unique to the region such as hearty stews. Zaragoza sits on the banks of the longest river in Spain; the river Ebro.
A day away from the city takes us to Monasterio de Piedra - an old Moorish castle which was donated by Alfonso the 2nd to the monks of Poblet to help them spread Christianity in the area. The main church and cloisters still stand in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Amongst the normally arid countryside of this area you suddenly find this lush green fertile oasis which surrounds the monastery. Caves, the “mirror lake” the 50 foot high “horsetail waterfall” streams, and rivers make for some very beautiful surroundings. A meal in a local restaurant with panoramic views of the lake add to the pleasure of the experience.
Finally. There is no need, when it comes to wine, to introduce you to the famous Rioja name. Logroño, the capital of the Logroño region is also home to some of the finest bodegas in the area. Situated further downstream than Zaragosa, again on the river Ebro, this pleasant little town offers a notable cathedral and is particularly famous for its tapas bars which are found on Calle de Laurel. The highlight of this day though has to be a visit to one of the largest and best known Bodegas in the country. Here on the outskirts of the town we visit a Bodego, which to the background of the Sierras de Cantabria and la Demanda is surrounded by vineyards on all sides. In one room alone 7,000 barrels stretch as far as the eye can see. After the guided tour relax for a moment on the balcony of the bodega sipping a glass of the finest Rioja whilst surrounding by the vineyards which produced the grapes. Lovely !!
