This is only our second time running this excursion so it new to those of you who may have already completed a lot of our other excursions. We have made the necessary tweaks to make it even more successful than the first time around. Based right in the heart of Valladolid the hotel is very close to the old part of town, the Plaza Mayor and the Plaza de España. This visit forms part of our “cooler” summer options, with temperatures which are generally several degrees below those of the south coast in the summertime.
Valladolid : A city situated amongst vineyards and which once served as the capital city of all Spain. In 1469 the most famous of the Spanish Royals, Ferdinand and Isobel, also known as the Catholic Monarchs were married here. Christopher Columbas died here, and as a result his home was converted into a museum which can still be visited. Miguel Cervantes, author of Don Quijote worked here and his former home is also a museum. Valladolid with a population of about half a million is the capital of Castilla – Leon and has an active city centre with much to see.
Staying in the central Hotel Parque Central. 3* B&B.
A mini river cruise can be organised at an additional cost by our guide on arrival.
Other excursions included are a visit to the town of Peñafiel and the Fiesta in Sepulveda.
The town of Peñafiel is the very centre of this region and is overlooked by its' own majestic medieval castle. Free time during our stay allows us to visit the centre of the town. A fascinating square in the town known as “Plaza del Coso”, used since medieval times as a bullring, is still used from time to time for this purpose. The balconies of the old wooden houses surrounding the square being rented out on bullfight days to give the best view of the bullfight. An guided visit to the Castle of Peñafiel is available, followed by a visit to the adjacent bodega Protos (included in the price) . Here we can sample local wines.
Sepulveda: We arrive in the town to join in the festivities of their July Festival. A medieval market fills the streets during the daytime. Then at dusk the streets of the town are lit up with 500 torches. Locals pour into the streets to join in with music and dance. The night culminating in a late night concert.
This excursion offers a nice mix of culture, comfort and fun in a part of Spain which is mostly known for its fabulous Ribero del Duero wines, but which has so much more to offer.
